Payal Khandwala launched her eponymous fashion label in 2012.
As a painter, colour and structure have always been central to her story telling.
Her approach to clothing is much like her art. The prism with which she sees fashion is therefore distinctive, she treats dressmaking as simply a shift in canvas.
She orchestrates colour and textures to create layered separates that are
dramatic yet minimal, with subtle attention to detail. She drapes, twists, loops, pleats and tucks to sculpt the clothing around the body.
Her muse is an intelligent, non-conformist woman. A woman with a refined sense of luxury, and one that will not sacrifice her comfort for it.
As a philosophy her clothing is not about trends, even less about fashion. Her clothes are about a relaxed timeless style, a spirited attitude and a relentless need to express ones own individuality.
Her background in Fine Arts and Fashion coupled with her cultural influences,
growing up in Mumbai, schooling in New York and in Barcelona give her
an inimitable perspective. Her sensibilites intuitively marry these references to
create an aesthetic that is global but with an inherently Indian soul.
Her clothes are made, with love, in India using handwoven silks, khadi, cottons and linens in a palette that is rich and soaked in our tradition of colour.
Payal received her first Art Scholarship at the National Board Level in 1990.
She graduated from SNDT in Mumbai. Under the tutelage of Wendell Rodricks, amongst several awards for Illustration, Design and Construction she also won ‘Designer of the Year’ in a nationwide competition held by ShoppersStop in 1994.
She graduated with honors, with a BFA from the PARSONS School Of Design, New York. Whilst in New York she worked with designer Sandy Dalal, CFDA’s winner of the Perry Ellis Award for menswear in 1997.
She has a diploma from METAFORA, an international workshop for Contemporary Art in Barcelona in 2005. And in 2007 she received Society Magazine’s Young Achievers Award in the Fine Arts category. Her artworks have been exhibited extensively in Mumbai, Delhi, New York, London, Barcelona, Tokyo and Singapore.
She was recently featured as one of the five names to watch out for, from India, in Vogue Italia’s September 2012 issue.
