Over the years Fashion Design Council of India has worked to provide a platform for Indian Fashion Designers with the aim of promoting Indian Fashion Wear in domestic as well as International arenas. The clear goal is to endorse and encourage designers grow their brands locally and internationally.

The Council has address the changing needs of the industry as and when they evolve and has worked to foster growth of the Indian Fashion Industry with support from the Ministry of Textiles and other related Governmental bodies. In order to work towards its mission, the council has worked in the following directions for industry growth and betterment.

India Fashion Week & Trade Show Events:

The Council has been instrumental in promoting the Indian Fashion Industry globally through its platforms India Fashion Week – Autumn Winter & Spring Summer & India Mens Week. FDCI has also started India Couture Week to cater to the growing needs of the Indian Couture Designers making it the 3rd Couture event in the world. FDCI’s mission is to hold more such industry developing initiatives.

Retail Distribution & Network:

To study the present distribution/reseller network and to see how designers could benefit from this network.




Fund resource mobilization for the industry is an important goal. Funding to be mobilized from Government schemes, corporate sponsorships, direct investments etc. 

Forecasting and Trends:

Create a trend forecast forum for domestic and exports markets. 

Industry Promotion:

It promotes fashion designers in India & internationally through strategically planning and executing promotion campaigns. The forum hopes to cultivate and consolidate a market base for products designed by Indian Fashion Designers.

Technical Up gradation & Training:

This will focus on technical standardizing across the industry. To professionalize the prêt-a-porter industry by having standard norms for all designer members. These could include sizing norms, accounting norms, labeling norms etc. The Council in the past has developed a system of norms for member fashion designers. FDCI plans to organize and conduct entrepreneurial development programmes, quality awareness programmes and so on. 


To host a website listing the objectives of the FDCI and also create links to the web pages of individual designers.

Resource Centre:

The FDCI will set up a research/ resource center that would cover the history of Indian fashion and would catalogue the collections of designer members.

Government Policies:

FDCI aims at liaison with the government and related governmental bodies on matters pertaining to excise duty, taxation systems, preferential tariffs for cargo etc.

Fashion Hub:

The Council would also like to work towards creating a Fashion Village / Hub. Work on the same in association with other governmental bodies is in progress. 


In tandem with its mission to be the apex body representing Fashion Design industry, the FDCI is working in the development and growth of the fashion industry. In order to attain this, the FDCI has in the past and is doing the following:

The Council provides an effective forum to represent the interests of its members for their professional advancement and growth.

It represents its members before any government related bodies and International organizations, as may be deemed necessary.

The Council provides research database from specialists in the fields of Trend Forecasting.

The Council facilitates international exchange and sharing of information and expertise.

It creates mutually beneficial linkages with similar councils across the globe. One of the functions of FDCI is to create a comprehensive database of the member fashion designers.

Other than the main aims and objectives as contoured above, the FDCI will also outline ancillary and supporting objectives such as:

   Management of grants, endowments, trusts and so on.

   Identify and maintain control over regional chapters.

   To negotiate contracts on behalf of the society.

   Manage real estate issues for the council.

   Award fellowships, scholarships, etc. towards recognition of excellence.

   Enter into arrangements with Government bodies, etc. that may be conducive to the attainment of the objectives of this forum.

   To aid in the revival of the Handloom sector by undertaking developmental projects in different parts of the country.

   To work closely with textile mills in India, develop fabric and educate the manufacturer on the importance of fashion designer forecasts.

   Promoting Fashion Journalism by training the media professionals and sponsoring the travel of media to international fashion events.
