Sabyasachi Mukherjee graduated in the summer of 1999 from NIFT Kolkata with three Major Awards. Four months later he started his eponymous label after which he started retailing at all major stores in India.
With three major awards from NIFT Kolkata – The Best Design collection, the Ritu Kumar award for Excellence in Design and the Viewers Choice award at the NIFT Confluence – Sabyasachi ventured out to do his “own thing”.
In 2004, Sabyasachi went global with the Kuala Lumpur Fashion Week, The Fashion Week of America at Miami, and forayed into films with his costumes designed for Sanjay Leela Bhansalis Black.
Sabyasachi’s design philosophy is very simple and clear – Personalised imperfection of the human hand. Deserts, gypsies, prostitutes and antique textiles have been a lifelong inspiration for this designer who believes that clothes should just be an extension of one’s intellect.
