Human beings are vastly influenced by their surrounding environment. These influences generally find expression in works of art and design, in different forms. Having spent our formative years in Delhi, as designers, we invariably find ourselves taking cues from the fast paced industrial chaos of the capital city. The desire to form an explorative yet relevant identity, led us to establish the label gaurav & ritika.
Our inspiration comes from events, people, and objects that we see around us from day to day. A tapestry of varied cultural references infused with urbane existence plays a key role when on the drawing board. This has led to our natural affinity to line, and shape, and a fascination for post modern architecture. The haphazard geometry of Indian cities finds reflection in much of our work, and has therefore taken us on a tangent different from the more popular explorations of traditional Indian kitsch.
Working on our drafts we use a synthesis of self developed pattern-making techniques alongside traditional methods of draping to create distinct silhouettes. The challenge of harmonizing a line based design philosophy with the curves of the human body is a constant in all our collections. Rectangular or cuboid shapes are therefore softened by folds, tucks and pleats to form garments which are feminine and modern at the same time.
