Malvika Vaswani is an award-winning experimental designer based in the heart of Mumbai, India. Working with unconventional materials, she aspires to re-contextualise traditional craft techniques to create unique handmade products.
Coming home to India after graduating from the Rhode Island School of Design, she continued to evolve her thesis work exploring the skilled handcrafting traditions slowly disappearing all over the subcontinent.
Navigating through various artisan studios, she realised there was a stagnation of creative innovation. This inspired her to begin to experiment using technology as a complement to orthodox techniques in the hope that it would be
a catalyst for new inspirations. Influenced by architecture and design movements such as the Bauhaus and Art deco, every collection is handmade locally using ethical manufacturing practices along with unconventional materials and techniques. Consciously blending the contemporary with the conventional Malvika creates products that bear the Made in India mark with pride. Having recently rediscovered a fascination for human history as well as a sensitivity to the current state?of the world, she strives to be more sustainable and ethical in her practice.
