Tulsi is the brand name of the renowned, diversified, and innovative textile designer Neeru Kumar. Traditional techniques, a contemporary sensibility, and an inventive use of colour form the hallmark of her work – acknowledged today as a landmark in the evolution of Indian textiles. In the realm of handwoven textiles, Neeru Kumar is regarded as one of India’s most exceptional and creative designers, and she is a graduate of the National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad.
Four decades of dedicated work in the field of textiles – developing, exploring, experimenting, and innovating with India’s vast wealth of skills, materials, and traditions-led her to evolve her own unique brand of textiles and textile products.
While basic handlooms and khadi are transformed by her into chic, contemporary outfits for working women, her range of textiles and saris in silk and cotton are specially woven by traditional Jamdani and Ikat weavers. Fine khadi cotton embellished with kantha work, silk appliqué, various dyeing techniques, and intricate embroidery come together to create a collection that appeals to both the purist and the modern aesthete. Her distinctive colour palette – rooted in tradition yet translated into the contemporary – allows the yellow of mustard fields, the earth’s muted tones, charcoal black, and blazing sunsets to blend effortlessly with delicate pinks, cool mint, and avocado green. Neeru Kumar’s textile creations possess an extraordinary quality: practical in use, yet chosen above all for their beauty.
Her ability to seamlessly merge contrasting sensibilities has drawn discerning buyers and established her as one of the most creative and sought-after labels, not only in India but also in niche markets across Japan, the US, and Europe. A key reason for her strong global impact is her preference for quiet elegance – design that doesn’t announce its origin loudly but carries the understated sophistication synonymous with excellence.
Her repertoire includes two principal ranges: textiles for the home, and garments for women and men, both traditional and western. Her fabrics are crafted into bed covers, cushion covers, throws, and wall hangings, along with accessories such as shawls and scarves that complement her extensive garment range – woven, printed, or embroidered. Shibori techniques are used in select pieces to create striking effects on silk, cotton, and linen blends.
There is also a collection of hand-embroidered, quilted, or appliqué bed covers and quilts that are unique to the store and exceptional in their aesthetic appeal. In addition, a wide selection of cushions featuring tribal Banjara embroidery – carefully sourced and individually assembled into cushions and throws (or wall hangings) – adds another dimension to the collection.
