Design Philosophy – Sumitra Backliwal
After observing a gap between spectacle and substance in the fashion accessories industry, I launched my label SUMRITA in 2003 with one objective:
To create accessories that understood the rhythm of real life, yet carried the soul of craftsmanship.
We opened our first store in Ambawatta, Delhi, and from the very beginning, the design philosophy has been about people.
It begins with a deep respect for craftsmanship — working closely with artisans whose skill and intuition shape each piece by hand.
It continues through our material choices — where every texture and finish is considered not just for its visual appeal, but for comfort, durability, and quiet luxury.
And it culminates in our relationship with the wearer — because an accessory, no matter how well-designed, is incomplete until it becomes part of someone’s story. Every product is made with an intention to feel personal.
Whether it’s the clasp on a bag, the embroidery on a shawl, or the silhouette of a piece of jewellery, the goal is to blend design with purpose, and elegance with everyday ease.
