Inspired by the rich traditional craft of India, Sunita’s work is a combination of unique sensibility, especially in tone and texture. They have an earthy ethnicity with modern interpretation. Her work epitomizes simplicity with careful detailing. Especially hand-woven fabrics are used thereby promoting the handloom with style. The resulting garment evokes a sense of culture from where it originates. Her clothes are original contemporary while at thesame time pushing forward the traditional skills. A 1990 graduate of National institute of Fashion Technology, Sunita Shanker made her first professional foray in 1994 and launched her own label in 1995. Ever since, she has been retailing her designs from the premier stores in the country like Ensemble, Ogaan, Aza,

Melange, Cinnamon, Amethyst, Elahe to name a few. Apart from retailing under her label, Sunita has been a Fashion & Textile consultant to the Textile Ministry where she had the opportunity to travel to remote villages of India & create new designs in Textiles & further develop them into products, which are appropriately marketed. She has also been a design consultant to C.C.I.C. for a year where she designed new textiles in Chanderi, Ikats, Tussars, Khadi, Mangalgiri, Barmer Applique Work, Crewel Embroideries, and Silk Cotton blend fabrics from West Bengal etc. for Sarees, Apparels, Stoles for their womens’ wear department. Besides the domestic market she has retailed her work from Selfridges, The Conran Shop to name a few. She has been designing and developing textiles and apparels for the Japanese market. Her developments have been displayed at the Smithsonian Museum, Museum of the Far East in Sweden and Takashimaya Silk Museum to name a few. Since 2002 Sunita’s most important aspect of development has been Bandhini from Kutch along with surface treatment and texturization from Bengal. She creates a modern interpretation of the Kutchi Bandhini.
