Celebrating 40 Years Of Service

New Delhi, August 12, 2023 : Tamana, the NGO dedicated to the cause of disability celebrated its 40th year, with a fashion show titled “Celebrations”, at Hyatt Regency, Delhi. The showcasing was an homage to inclusion of the differently-abled in society, displaying their immeasurable courage through a ramp walk, supported by The FDCI CSF Trust.

The show witnessed 80 multiply-disabled and autistic individuals, who walked confidently with several dignitaries. According to the President of Tamana Dr. Shayama Chona Padma Bhushan & Padma Shri awardee, “For the last 40 years, Tamana has been upholding for this cause and today the three centers, providing world-class services.”

To add to the celebrations, Hyatt Regency, Delhi which has been the hospitality partner of the show for over the last decade, also celebrated four decades of its existence, its 40th anniversary, this year.

The chief guest, Dr. Justice DY Chandrachud, Chief Justice of India pledged his support to the cause, which was also promoted by Mr. Sunil Sethi, Chairman Fashion Design Council of India and the FDCI CSF Trust. Leading names from the design world – J J Valaya, Suneet Varma, Payal Jain, Anju Modi, Namrata Joshipura, Rajesh Pratap Singh, Amit Aggarwal, and Ashish Soni showcased their collections at the fashion show.

A key highlight was Tamana Chona, National Awardee, and the inspiration behind Tamana NGO, who exhibited her artwork and merchandise exclusively adapted from abstract art at the event. She is a symbol of hope and crusader for the differentlyabled, proving that given the right care and interventions anyone can realise their full potential.

Mr. Sunil Sethi, Chairman FDCI and FDCI CSF Trust said, “As we celebrate the spirit of fortitude the children of Tamana have displayed in the eye of adversity, it is time to pay tribute to two towering giants. Tamana and Hyatt hotels complete 40 years of path breaking work, and I would like to congratulate them on their commitment to excellence and changing lives.”

The Fashion Design Council of India has fostered an endearing relationship for many years now with Mrs. Chona and daughter, Tamana. Fashion brought happiness to life in hues of ruby red, as five garments each by the designers narrated a tale of the fire within, to surmount myriad odds and emerge victorious.

ABOUT TAMANA

Tamana is an NGO established in 1984 by the mother of the girl, Tamana, who was born with Cerebral Palsy. Its first centre, Tamana Special Education Centre was inaugurated by the late Lady Diana, Princess of Wales in 1992. It was set up to provide rehabilitative services to differently-abled children between the age group 6-18 years. Now Tamana has two more centers – the Tamana Skill Development, NIOS Centre and Hostel, which is a Vocational Centre catering to adults, and the Autism Centre for those on the spectrum. The Autism Centre was inaugurated in 2003 by the former President of India, late Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam.

For its contribution in the field of disabilities, Tamana was granted a Special Consultative Status by the United Nations Economic and Social Council in 2005.

ABOUT FDCI
