SIER LAPALANG

Inspired by a Khasi folktale of “Sier Lapalang”, the collection brings the story of this folktale on Eri silk fabric with an aim to achieve contemporary looks by blending locally known techniques with modern cuts.

Sier Lapalang is the story about a male deer, the only son of his doting mother. Soon he grows to be a beautiful stag and became so restless. Bored of his same surroundings, he disobeyed his mother in search of delicious vegetation that grows in the mountains. Sadly, he was killed by the people of the land in the mountains while on his search. This folktale talks about three stories, one is about a mother and son relationship, second is about man versus nature and third is about this brave stag who seeks to explore beyond his comfort zone.

Inspired by this folktale we bring forth our upcoming collection “Sier Lapalang” by using handwoven Eri silk fabric which was naturally dyed and handwoven by our local weavers in Ribhoi district, Meghalaya. To capture the story “of this folktale techniques such as handwoven weft motif was used. We also used “Khneng embroidery” the only known form of embroidery in the state of Meghalaya. It’s one of the oldest and almost dying art form practice by the people of Mustoh village. Other traditional detailing such as “wet muna” (braiding) and “wet syrnai”(tasseling) were also used to retain the essence of the community textile.
