A powerful reaction to the formalism and strict categories that organised existing art institutions in the early 1900s, art nouveau emerged as resistance. Symbolised by the curvaceous, disobedient line, the work of Klimt, Muccha and Toulouse Lautrec, it demanded a return to nature. It shook things up, reminding us that we are not automated machines. we are sinuous, alive and we deserve to be free.

In a world where democracy is for sale, and we read about mass destruction over breakfast, we are reminded of the the power of art. Music, fashion and the right to creative expression belong in the streets and public institutions. Breaking free with all due respect, let us be reminded that we have the right to dance in the office.
