Belonging to a family involved in German Exports, Rimzim Dadu was introduced to the manufacture of clothing at an early age and it was only natural that she would eventually take to fashion professionally. After graduating from Pearl Academy of Fashion, India, she set up an independent label called My Village in October 2007. Since then she has showcased seasonal lines of womenswear at the fashion weeks in Mumbai and New Delhi. The name My Village represents a space where she manifests her ideas.
Her inclination has always been towards surfaces and the very foundation of My Village rests on texturing, not just on using textiles; She looks at ways of using traditional materials in more inventive ways. She is drawn to details in the extreme and this fascination for micro components in surface textures can take obsessive proportions!
Rimzim Dadus work will be showcased at the V&A museum exhibit called Fabric of India, later this year in London. Her work was also recently a part of an exhibition on contemporary Indian textiles called Fracture at the Devi Art Foundation. Rimzim Dadu has been covered by the likes of BBC and Vogue Italy among many others and has won 2 Elle Style Awards and a Grazia Young Designer Award.
Rimzim Dadu the brand is a living archive of the designers innovation through surface textures. The design philosophy of discarding convention is actually a homage to traditional techniques and materials by way of deconstruction?, re-engineering? and assembly.
The brand is used as her playground for experimentation of surface developments and allowing her vision to take tactile forms. The design philosophy is lead by instinct which lends an alternative perspective to the use of traditional materials by the way of unorthodox yet intuitive hand craft techniques and vice versa. Often this involves deconstruction, modification and reassembly into a new form. Common design details feature micro elements being enlarged into macro proportions or on a similar strain printed patterns being built into three dimensional surfaces.
