A recurring fascination with ethnic communities, an unrelenting wanderlust and disparate cultural interests and journeys, all find distinct expression in designer Urvashi Kaurs ZIRAN. A collection bursting with sub-Chinese vivacity, Ziran finds its inspiration in the nomadic folk of Xining, China, so far unspoken, unseen and unaccounted for. As people far removed from Mainland China and all its popular connotations, these sub cultures are defined by their allegiance to a philosophy, not a land. Her sartorial sojourn attempts to pay homage to their unmistakable honesty, inherent rawness, cultural evolution and free-spirited irreverence. Industrial perfection is contentedly traded for semiotics, material values are overlooked for shared connections, all the while staying true to her defiantly Indian aesthetic.
A deliberate move is the experimentation with horizontal stripes, and the introduction of plaid, both of which are subjected to an anything but traditional translation. Engineered placements of Shibori, Block Prints and the tie and dye technique spill over from previous collections, with the infusion of batik and circular motifs.
The introduction of a dominant universal trend this season, denim, provides a stiffer quality for structured outwear. There exists an evident dichotomy between the rigid and the fluid. Cinched waists and ruching techniques with Obi belts add a calculated fit to otherwise slack silhouettes, and a relaxed vibe continues, highlighting Urvashis affinity for languid lines. Chinese inspired necklines, raglan and kimono sleeves, baggy culottes and palazzos, fuss free drapes with a generous slouch, crop tops, wrap dresses, jumpsuits sided with overblown sleeves, shirtdresses, skirts, jackets sans sleeves, saris, all feed on structural ease for silhouettes, adapted as a nod to deconstruction.
As each product is meticulously finished, it reflects in its structure, the thought of its creator.
