All of 25 now, Nitya actually launched her label at 20! And even though within a year she was selling at 8 stores and doing well, she decided to slow down and study at the Parsons School of Design in New York. I Wanted to learn more, wanted to know everything about design. But even though I majored in apparel, Valliyan had always been alive while I was studying, so I just want to scale it up now, says Nitya.
Full of beans and talent, Nitya draws inspiration from her Punjabi roots, hence the name Valliyan which in Punjabi means hoops! My jewellery is Indian with a very international perspective, she says. In fact a lot of Nityas earrings use the traditional motifs and enamelling one would see in traditional gold ornaments popular with Punjabis.
Being successful at trunk shows in Egypt, Dubai and New York has encouraged Nitya to make her debut at WIFW this season to attract both domestic and international buyers. And going by the number of buyers that walked into her stall even while I chatted with her, I can tell that it will be a successful debut for the sprightly Valliyan girl at WIFW!
