After seven years, veteran style guru Monisha Jaising is back; she is set to dazzle with her first ever bridal show in the capital city

She was the inventor of the much-loved kurti, which became a rage, almost a wardrobe staple for every Indian woman, ten years back. But there is a lot more to Mumbai’s resort wear guru Monisha Jaising than just knits and jerseys. For the first time she is dressing an Indian bride, in a career spanning 25 years. “I never thought I will ever in my life do bridal, but then I also moved on from resort wear to Red Carpet looks. I wanted to explore all aspects of design and sensibilities. It has been an exciting and challenging journey, frankly I never knew I could do this,” she says.

With her forte being Western cuts, styling and philosophy, for Monisha this is quite a curve ball. “But what to do, life does throw curve balls at you, you must know how to dodge them efficiently,” she laughs.

Interestingly, she is clear that she will, within the framework of what she is best at, come up with a line, for a modern, thinking bride, who knows what she wants. “Well…to sum it up, it will be beautiful, luxurious, elegant and sophisticated but minus the heavy duty price tags,” she admits. So, the concentration will be less on bling, embroidery, embellishments and more on shape, fit and appeal. “I won’t say there will be none of the above, but what I will admit is that it is not OTT, in-your-face or over-the-top. It is subdued glamour, for a woman with an intellect, who doesn’t care about how many sparkling crystals there are on her lehenga, but likes the way it is finished, styled and presented,” she confesses.

The key here is aesthetics and the buzzword is creating a style that blends and complements a bride’s personality rather than take away from it. “I am a bit of an experimentalist—-I like to mix old world charm with newness; masculine with feminine forms; and sports with glamour; odd mixes you would say, but if done well they look stunning. I also strongly believe that it is the new era for the bride, she has a lot more exposure than just courting blood red, zardosi lehengas. She is ready to break rules, try something fresh and be a showstopper on her D-Day,” she concludes.
