Shareena Prya Dwarka’s ancestors lived in India five generations ago and even though this first timer at the AIFW AW’ 17 has no relatives left here, she says, “the legacy lives on with my distinctive Indian looks”.

Shareena’s parents are from Suriname, South America, and moved base to Holland, and now that she is ‘back home’ as she says, it makes them proud that she is connected to her roots. She got her first break at 16, when she won the L’Oreal competition, and what motivated her to take modelling seriously was in 2010, when she bagged the crown of Ms India-Holland beauty pageant. “Modelling is a bit like acting, you must have the ability to transform yourself like an actor and play the part etched out for you. But what I admire about the fashion world here is that many older models, who have walked the ramp for years are still doing so with utmost poise, which is a rare thing in Holland as the competition is so tough to break into,” she admits.

After a degree in human resources, Shareena lived in Mumbai for six months to finish her internship and now she hopes to go back and study animal science, though in the future being a wildlife expert is what interests her. “I like to travel, learn a new language, so I can speak a smattering of Hindi and I love to eat and cook. I boil my own veggies, as Indian curries are not ‘model food’, even though they are delicious. I keep fit by working out four to five times in a week,” she says.

Not much of a planner, Shareena can’t say what she will be doing five years down the line, as “I am more of a go with the flow kind of girl. But yes, being positive always works, in any situation. Also, keeping no expectations will lead to lesser disappointments, which is my mantra”, says the 27-year-old, five feet ten inch tall model.
