“As a designer I am constantly looking deeper and searching for the affects of art and design on contemporary culture. I also believe strongly in the power of self expression as a tool of change and empowerment in an increasingly globalized atmosphere.”
The work of Ethiopian artist, Dawit Abebe strongly resonates with Urvashi as it captures the theme of public versus private spheres and the conflict and assimilation that occurs subsequently. His large Mixed Media paintings usually comprising of figures with their backs turned to the audience, with cubist shapes and a strong, graphic use of color has been the starting point of her Woolmark Collection.
“Choosing a restrained but evocative palette of Grey, Coral and Ecru Ive used multiple techniques and tried to convey a layered dialogue through my pieces. Dyeing the Merino yarn in these particular shades with Ombre techniques was the starting point. These yarns were then carefully stitched on to woolen fabrics in minutely planned symmetricity of parallel lines in various differing widths.
Taking forward the concept of linear symmetricity, Ive worked with sharp silhouettes that have multiple panels and insets. One of the signature elements in my work is the intricate hand pleating of natural fabrics, which lend themselves beautifully to this technique. The ombre yarns when further pleated create a wonderful visual, which adds a graphic dimension to the garment. Another key feature of my process is block printing. In certain pieces, I have used blocks as placement prints and then used the yarn treatment over that to obscure the original impression of the fabric.”
Using the warm, binding properties of wool as an anchor was led to another exploration. Thinking of textile, as a metaphor for reality, the designer have combined multiple block printed fabrics with the yarn treatment running over them to create cohesion amongst chaos. The resulting fabric seems tactile and organic and is reflective of a cultural heritage.
The designers endeavour through the process of this collection, is to look at textile and design as the markers of a widening cultural movement where multiple ethnicities are gradually coming together to celebrate a global fest of folklore and tradition. The label Urvashi Kaur looks at newer interpretations of handcrafted techniques, bringing the indigenous skills of the past into the future with a contemporary twist. This core belief finds incredible resonance in the wholesome, time worn qualities that Wool truly represents, and Woolmark collection is a testament to this association.
