Anupamaa Dayal pays tribute to her mom, through her SS 16 line ‘Manjhula’ which is soaked in the spirit of pure admiration

It was all about bottling up the spirit of ‘Manjhula’, in 60 garments, which was the biggest challenge Anupamaa Dayal faced while doing her SS 16 line for the AIFW, this season. After all, Manjhula is her mother, also her guiding light and the collection is inspired by, not just a moment of beauty, but by grief.

“My mom was diagnosed with Parkinson’s this year, and I have visualised the line in keeping with what she would have liked me to do as a designer, which is push the boundaries and take risks,” she says . That’s why you will see seven colours mixed together to create a splash, and even layering which Dayal has dexterously added in spurts to lengthy stripes. “I am a flower girl and have always loved them for their sensuality, but this time, graphics interested me, in a line which is so personal,” she says.

The motivation came from her mom telling her to be more of herself, rather than be shackled by what ‘to do’. “Inspiration is not something that is hard to come for me, if you are in touch with how and what you are feeling. This time, it was a gamut of feelings due to my mom’s illness and it made me think of how much of her is within me and it kept me going,” she adds.

As pinks have been replaced by dull browns, Dayal has stuck to her boho chic vibe, which is easy flowing and less structured. “I love trends and most people have a shallow understanding of them so they don’t follow them. But I enjoy keeping a watch on what’s in vogue, that’s why I have played with the upper torso, the collar bone and shoulders which most Indian women love to flaunt. It is in fact an extremely beautiful part of the female form, with fuller sleeves and dropped shoulders, which will be where the focus is, this time,” she concludes.
