Ambar Pariddhi Sahai pays homage to memories in an accessory line soaked in the hues of modern India.

Ambar Pariddhi Sahais costume jewellery label Mine of Design came from the amalgamation of two important aspects of design—-mine (quarry) and mine (something that belongs to me) when she started, fresh out of NIFT Delhi. Though like love, jewellery grew on her, as she explains that after studying apparel design, she was so fascinated by this genre that she did a course from NIFT (1996-99).
My inspiration has remained Modern India, and the jewellery is personal, not mass produced and hand-crafted to perfection. Even though I dont come from a jewellery background, with no one in my family even remotely interested in it, I learnt on the job, she smiles.
Aptly titled Memoir, her AIFW line is a tribute to interesting memories, which captures the underwater world, which comprises corals, shells, vintage coins and collectibles which colour our subconscious through vivid imagination, she says.
To create this effect she has used coloured stones with subdued tones enlivened with underwater flora and fauna shapes. We use base metals, natural stones and 22k gold micron plating. Though I must confess that designing comes naturally to me, as I am an instinctive person and most of my themes besides this collection for AIFW is mostly inspired from everyday life, she says.
Admitting that costume jewellery is all about making a statement and thats the reason for its popularity and also the advent of chunky pieces, Ambar adds that today it is more reflective of your personality and thats what makes it charming. Girls are going out a lot nowadays and they all want something new, yet affordable to wear and thats where designers like me come in. It is a growing market and we are looking at the exports arena now, she concludes.
